University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Honors Scholarship Awardees

The M.S. in Regulatory Science Program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy recognized Laura Murphy (M.P.H.) and Lt. Cmdr. Judy Park (Pharm.D.) for their contributions to the field.

Murphy, who serves as manager of pharmacovigilance in medical affairs at Fleet Laboratories, received the 2016 Ellen H. Yankellow Scholarship. Lt. Cmdr. Park, consumer safety officer at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), received the 2016 GlaxoSmithKline Scholarship in Regulatory Science.

Murphy is a first-year student in the M.S. in Regulatory Science program at the School of Pharmacy. She has 11 years of experience working at Fleet Laboratories in Lynchburg, Va, where she has held a series of assignments with increasing responsibilities. Before joining Fleet Laboratories, Murphy worked at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Hospitals and Johnson Health Center. She holds a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and a Master in Public Health (M.P.H.) from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. The Ellen H. Yankellow Scholarship will cover $11,000 of student tuition for Murphy.

Park is a second-year student in the M.S. in Regulatory Science program at the School of Pharmacy who has more than 16 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and at the FDA, with a focus on clinical trials, pharmacovigilance, and drug information. She is also a lieutenant commander with the U.S. Public Health Service and has served as an FDA expert witness, providing indictment evidence for numerous criminal cases involving misbranding and health care fraud charges, as well as the lead for multiple enforcement actions against unapproved drugs and numerous high risk, national compounding facility inspections. Before joining the FDA, Park worked at Bristol-Myers Squibb as a drug information specialist and clinical scientist, and at Sanofi-Aventis as a global pharmacovigilance and epidemiology specialist. The GlaxoSmithKline Scholarship in Regulatory Science will cover $8,000 of student tuition for Park.

An honors graduate of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, where she received both her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (B.S.P.) and Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), Yankellow serves as chair of the School’s Board of Visitors and has been recognized by numerous regional and national organizations for her philanthropy, commitment to the pharmacy profession, and community activism.
