Micro- and macro-optical coherence tomography for revealing airway dynamics at multiple resolution scales

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an emerging, non-invasive, biomedical imaging modality that provides real-time micron-resolution imaging of tissue surfaces and subsurface tissue structures. In human airways, there are two length scales of interest. 1) On the centimeter scale, the airway lumen deforms during respiratory pressure cycling to reveal airway wall abnormalities and airflow bottlenecks. 2) On the micrometer scale, the airway epithelium is lined with cilia that beat to propel mucus, an important “muco-ciliary clearance (MCC)” mechanism that keeps our lungs healthy. In this presentation I will cover my lab’s development of several OCT-based imaging technologies to capture these airway processes, including endoscopic OCT, diffusion-sensitive OCT, and parallel line-field OCT. These technologies are designed to aid medical researchers in the diagnosis and treatment of upper airway obstructive disorders, and lung diseases including cystic fibrosis and COPD.

About the Speaker

Amy Oldenburg is an Associate Professor of Physics & Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she directs the Coherence Imaging Laboratory, focusing on developing new optical and acoustic imaging techniques for biomedicine. She earned a Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in atomic and molecular optical physics, and a B.S. degree in Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology.
