You are invited to attend the next lecture of FDA’s 2017 CERSI Lecture Series on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at 3:00 – 4:00 pm EST via webinar. UCSF-Stanford CERSI is the host and their guest speaker is Steven Goodman, MD, MHS, PhD, who will present on: "Reproducibility in Medicine and Science.”  Additional information is provided below and also at: https://www.fda.gov/ScienceResearch/SpecialTopics/RegulatoryScience/ucm556493.htm . Please advertise this lecture to others at your University. Thank you!

About the Presentation

Dr. Goodman will discuss the problem of research reproducibility from several perspectives. He will begin by presenting on the varied meanings of the technical term “reproducible.” This term has been applied to everything from computations to methods, results and conclusions. Then, he will discuss how the concept relates to traditional notions of statistical significance. It will be argued that the term “reproducibility,” when used as a surrogate for scientific truth, is confusing and often misleading, and that we should instead be focused on cumulative evidence. A number of factors that are distorting the evidence base in clinical and laboratory research will also be discussed.
